Electronic Flight Bag Systems

The use of an EFB to manage operational information and data makes sense from both an operational and financial perspective. Just the use of an electronic performance tool can realise payload benefits that justify an EFB irrespective of its use for other functions.

On smaller aircraft, weight and space saving can be a significant benefit too with a laptop-based EFB System freeing up storage space on the aircraft that is otherwise occupied by manuals and navigation charts.

AirScript has a uniquely qualified and experienced team to guide and support you through the process of establishing an EFB System in your operation. Each EFB System consists of three constituent parts – the hardware, the software hosted on it and the management of the system. AirScript can provide or advise on each of these elements.

Hardware

Stand alone laptops (known as Class 1 devices) take a lot of knocks and misuse when used on the flight deck of an aircraft. AirScript can advise on a suitably robust model and can assist with acquiring the equipment at an attractive price. Introducing more sophisticated built-in devices becomes more complicated since aircraft certification issues arise, but, should this be your requirement, AirScript has experience with these types of system also.

Software

The range of software that can be hosted on even a Class 1 device is growing almost by the day. The following are some of the more common applications:

  • Document browser for Operations Manuals and other company documents in electronic format
  • Aircraft performance calculations
  • Weight and Balance calculations
  • Electronic completion of Voyage Reports and other company documentation
  • Terminal and airfield charts (not for direct use in flight unless hosted on a Class 2 or Class 3 device)

AirScript can implement any of these applications including the conversion of paper documents to suitable electronic versions. Additionally, through our associate company Evoke Systems, we can also implement a remote data management system by which you can provide and retrieve operational data and keep the EFB updated whilst the aircraft is away from base.

EFB Management

Your regulatory authority will require that the EFB System is "administered" appropriately before they give you permission for its use. AirScript can set up an administration system for you, produce a submission to your regulatory authority for permission for its use, provide training for your ground staff and flight crew and provide ongoing support once it is in service.

A feature that may be attractive to those operators who do not have sufficient resources in-house to provide for an EFB Administrator or administration system is that AirScript is able to act as the Administrator of your system for you. Your regulatory authority will require your EFB Administrator to be appropriately qualified in aircraft performance if your EFB System includes a performance tool and this qualification may be beyond the reach of the smaller operator. With AirScript supporting you, you can have all the functionality you require whilst we provide the expertise and the administration system on an ongoing basis.
